Wilderfolk · The Mendocino Coast
Learn to read the Mendocino Coast.
Mushrooms in winter, sea vegetables and whales in spring, berries and fire in summer. Wilderfolk teaches all of it on twelve acres of coastal forest outside Fort Bragg, California. Start with the free month-by-month foraging calendar below, then come and learn it on the ground.
The free download
Not on the coast? Take it home.
We made a month-by-month foraging calendar for the Mendocino Coast: what’s in season, and when. It works whether you’re here or three states away.
One email with the calendar. We don’t send much else.
Why join
The best way to learn this coast is to keep coming back to it.
Members get member pricing, learn from local instructors, and, at the Elder and Chief levels, have their name carved into the land. We keep it small: four camping zones, looked after well.
Come stay
Want to come once before you join?
You can book a night at Camp Candy Cap on Hipcamp right now. We keep it small, four zones, so book ahead.
What you’d learn
Skills you take home with you
Reading the forest
How a coastal forest works, what’s in season, and how to move through it well.
Coastal foraging & wild edibles
How to identify what’s safe, and the ethics of taking only what you should.
Tide pools
What the low tide reveals, and when to be standing there for it.
Fire building
Bow drill, no matches, done right.
Campfire cooking
Cooking simply over flame.
Reading the season
What the coast is doing this month, and what it does next.
The place
We didn’t manufacture any of it.
Coastal pines, a wood-fired sauna built from reclaimed old-growth and sea stones, and the Pacific a short walk through the trees. Mushrooms in winter, tide pools at low water, whales offshore in spring. We just look after it and teach it.
